Parent Sponsorship

The stages of Parent Sponsorship in Canada

The process of sponsoring parents to immigrate to Canada, known as Parent Sponsorship, begins annually and within a limited timeframe at the beginning of each calendar year. Parent Sponsorship is for individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents and wish to sponsor their parents (including biological or adoptive parents) to obtain permanent residency in Canada. If you meet the eligibility criteria for Parent Sponsorship, the first step is to complete the relevant application form online. After the completion deadline, these forms will be reviewed, and the Canadian immigration authorities will send email invitations to selected applicants to apply. If you receive an invitation email from the Canadian immigration authorities, you must submit your documents to complete the process.

To participate in the Parent Sponsorship program as a sponsor, you must be at least 18 years old and be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident living in Canada, or a Canadian citizen by birth. Additionally, you must be able to financially support the individuals you are sponsoring.

The required minimum income for sponsorship depends on the number of individuals under your sponsorship. For example, the income requirement for sponsoring two people was $38,618 CAD in 2015, $39,372 CAD in 2016, $39,813 CAD in 2017, and $40,379 CAD in 2018. For sponsoring three people, the income requirement was $47,476 CAD in 2015, $48,404 CAD in 2016, $48,945 CAD in 2017, and $49,641 CAD in 2018.

Please note that if the person is under 18 years old or does not reside in Canada during the sponsorship process for permanent residency, if the sponsor’s address is incorrect, if the sponsor’s own permanent residency process has not been completed, if the sponsor fails to demonstrate the required financial capacity, if the sponsor has outstanding immigration loan or other government debts, if the sponsor has declared bankruptcy, if the sponsor has a criminal record or is in detention or imprisonment, if the applicant receives government assistance, if the sponsor is unlawfully present in Canada, or for other specific reasons determined by the immigration authorities, the person cannot be a sponsor.

In the Parent Sponsorship program, biological parents, adoptive parents, or individuals who have accepted the sponsor as their legal guardian are eligible to participate. This includes cases where your family has been separated or divorced.
